BLUES CRAZY!

If it isn't clear from previous posts here, I have gone a little blues crazy. I learned the 12-bar blues in E, A, D and G. I am begining to feel like I can play it in a convincing bluesy way. I have my drum machine pounding out a nice blues rhythm (about 80 BPM) and it actually sounds like something.

I also picked up the harmonica again. When I was in the military I used to play harp with a fiend who was quite good, and picked up some blues riffs. I finally gave up because he was much better than me and I became frustrated with trying to get the single notes perfect.

So now I am back to learning the harp, and I have found a pretty cool site with lessons, and blues riffs etc.

Yeah, harps are fun. Not the instrument you wanna share with another, tho - a bit of the ol' personal hygene issue come into that! I've got a few in the main rock'n'roll blues keys, and I remember a tip someone told me about years' ago (I don't play the harp very well, believe me, but I can get away with it if I have to at a jam!) To use a harp as a blues scale, just chose the harp that's a 4th above the key you're playing in. ie. If the songs' in A, use a D harp, and it sounds bluesy enuff to work. (It's probably the 'punk rock' version of how to huse a blues harp, I dunno!)

I used to work alongside an associate who was a kick-a$$ harmonica player. he would just turn yp at concerts ect with his little case with 12 harps in it, stand and play along. he could play along to almost anything - all he had to know was what key the song was in! He could just modulate, transpose and improvise on the spot - lots of fun to work with.

I can usually improvise in a guitar, bass, piano or even the drums (if needs be), but this guy was great on the harp - he could create all sorts of moods. Of course, he was an older bloke, but he wasn't black nor was he into the blues! D'oh! hahahaa.

Go for it!
